Academy Structure
The Fire Protection career field has a distinct rank/order structure and the goal of the ACCFTA is to ensure students learn the history and traditions of the fire service to prepare them for employment in the fire service, therefore, each class will be divided into shifts. All Cadets will serve as a Cadet Officer. One student will be assigned as Cadet Commander and each shift will be assigned a Cadet Lieutenant.
This structure will facilitate training evolution rotations, work assignments, and will provide each Cadet with experience in supervision, management, leadership, and chain of command, all critical functions in the fire service. These assignments are part of the training in the ACCFTA.
Cadet Commander
On a weekly basis, a Cadet will be assigned the position of Cadet Commander. The responsibility of the Cadet Commander is to supervise, manage, and lead the Cadet Lieutenants and their shifts in training and work assignments. The Cadet Commander shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
- Supervise and manage Cadet Lieutenants in their prescribed duties and work assignments.
- Act as a liaison to instructors, administrative staff, and Cadets as directed.
- Assist in problem solving under the direction of an instructor or staff member.
- Coordinate activities and work assignments performed by multiple shifts by directing and supervising Cadet Lieutenants.
- Maintain general and sanitary conditions of the classroom, building, and grounds. Oversee the clean-up procedure at the end of the day.
- Report to a member of the administrative staff or an instructor when clean-up is completed and ready for inspection of the building and grounds.
Cadet Lieutenant
A Cadet Lieutenant will be appointed weekly. Each Cadet Lieutenant shall be held accountable for duties assigned during the shift. The Cadet Lieutenant shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
- Accountability of all personnel in the company.
- Acts as primary or first level supervisor during training and work assignments.
- Assures that the shift is seated after each break.
- Supervises the shift’s assigned clean-up duties. Reports to the Cadet Commander when the facility is ready for inspection.
- Assists the Cadet Commander as requested.
- Assures that all members of the shift are dressed appropriately based on the ACCFTA dress code.
