Distance Education Summer Offerings

  • 2024 DE Summer Institute: HyFlex Teaching and Learning
    The 2024 DE Summer Institute: HyFlex Teaching and Learning, sponsored by the Distance & Alternative Education Office, is designed to help you prepare for teaching a HyFlex class. This supportive cohort will focus on applying effective practices for implementing HyFlex delivery in your own course, demonstrate how to utilize HyFlex technology in the classroom, and provide tips for integrating synchronous learning activities and engagement in a HyFlex learning environment.

    • Saturday, August 24
    • Morning Session- 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Afternoon Session- 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
  • Distance Education Asynchronous Training Courses
    • The asynchronous training courses are offered by the Office of Distance & Alternative Education. These workshops are offered as self-paced courses in Blackboard. Registration is ongoing.

Service Learning Summer Opportunities

  • Service-Learning Online Synchronous Summer Institute
    • Ready to bring the community into your classroom? This Synchronous Summer Institute will introduce you to the fundamentals of service-learning theory, course construction, implementation, and evaluation. Our online synchronous training includes three 2-hour Zoom sessions that takes place over a 3-week period. By the end of the training, participants will have a customized Service-Learning course plan grounded in their own curriculum that they can implement as soon as their next teaching semester!
      • Session 1: Friday, June 7 – 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
      • Session 2: Friday, June 21 – 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
      • Session 3: Friday, June 28 – 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Service-Learning Asynchronous Online Training
    • This online training will introduce you to the fundamentals of service-learning theory, course construction, implementation, and evaluation. Our asynchronous, fully online training includes six modules on Blackboard that can be completed in six hours. By the end of the training, participants will have a completed Service-Learning course plan grounded in their own curriculum that they can implement as soon as their next teaching semester!
  • ACC Service-Learning Faculty Refresher Registration
    • Already a Service-Learning Faculty member? This Synchronous Service-Learning Refresher course will review the best practices of service-learning course construction, implementation, and evaluation and will provide updates on our program growth. This 1.5-hour Zoom course will give you a chance to meet other Service-Learning Faculty and ask questions about your upcoming service-learning courses.

Remote Recess

Remote Recess sessions allow faculty to gather online and learn something new in a low-stakes, casual, and FUN way.

  • June 4 – Quick Start with Panopto
    • Panopto is ACC’s new video hosting & streaming platform that has been available across the College since Spring 2023. Panopto is a powerful tool that features video creation and editing functionality; automatic machine captioning; effortless access on desktop and mobile devices; and includes integrations with Blackboard and Zoom. Join this session to get some quick-start tips for this easy-to-use tool.
  • June 11 – Respondus Lockdown Browser: Setup & Activation
    • LockDown Browser is a custom browser that secures the testing environment within the Blackboard Learning Management System. The Setup & Activation workshop will demonstrate the steps to enable Lockdown Browser for an assessment, additional test environment options, troubleshooting tips, and valuable best practices.
  • June 18 – Poll Everywhere: Add Interaction to Online Sessions
    • Poll Everywhere is a free software that gives you the ability to turn your synchronous course sessions or meetings into an engaging experience. You can survey students to get instant feedback, build word clouds to find what participants think is important, have them ask questions anonymously, or turn your class into a chapter review quiz show. In our training session, everyone will get the chance to try out the different question formats and get ideas to integrate this tool into your online gatherings. Please come to this session with an extra device like a smartphone or tablet, if you have one.
  • July 9 – Improving Student Retention with Padlet
    • Join us for a presentation by Phil Patrone, ACC History faculty member, and Academic Technology Fellow, for an overview of how he used Padlet to improve retention in his 8-week, asynchronous gateways courses.
  • July 23 – Blackboard Basics: Course Copy Procedure & Best Practices
    • Getting ready for the upcoming semester and not sure how to copy your current course content into a new Blackboard course shell? Confident in your skills but interested in picking up some additional helpful tips and tools? “BB Basics: Course Copy Procedure & Best Practices” workshop will demonstrate the steps for performing a successful course copy as well as tips for ensuring that the content is accessible to students in the upcoming semester.

  • Using Generative AI to Enhance Classroom Engagement
    • The Committee for Faculty Innovation and Development (CFID) in conjunction with the Faculty Center for Learning Innovation (FCLI) and the TLED Office of Faculty Development and the Office of Belonging and Purpose offers an opportunity for ACC Faculty (Instructors, Counselors, Librarians) to attend the 2024 Learn and Go Summer Faculty Forum to be held on Thursday June 13th, 2024 at the ACC Highland Campus.

Teaching and Learning Academy

The Teaching and Learning Academy is designed to support faculty based on evidence-based teaching strategies, reflective practice, and teaching innovation. Anchored in the ACC Faculty Values and developed by twenty-five faculty for faculty, the Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) contributes to student success by expanding faculty teaching practices. Essential to the Teaching and Learning Academy is the creation of a cohort of faculty who will learn from each other by exploring the scholarship, art, and passion of teaching.

Summer Software Day

Summer Software Day is an annual event that offers workshops for all ACC faculty and staff. The event provides an opportunity to keep up to date with your tech skills and learn new ones to implement in your classrooms and day-to-day tasks. This year, Summer Software Day will be delivered entirely online. Faculty and staff are welcome to submit proposals to present on a variety of topics, including ACC resources, Adobe tools, Google Suite, teaching online, and more.

Class Book Club – Hosted by ACC Libraries

ACC Library Services invites you to participate, engage with your peers, and explore Stephanie Land’s memoir, Class, with us! We are hosting various synchronous and asynchronous discussions about the book, as well as in-person options at some library locations.

More details can be found in this amazing guide, including the interest form to join one of our online discussions and a Padlet to share your own “shelfie” and thoughts on the book.

If you haven’t grabbed your copy of Class just yet, stop by your nearest ACC Campus Library. A limited number of ebooks are also available for checkout if you prefer to read on your favorite device.
