Teaching Evaluation of Deans and Department Chairs
Any Dean or Department Chair who also teaches classes for the college must be evaluated for that teaching as faculty within the department(s) in which they teach. For evaluation purposes, their teaching role is typically separate and unrelated to their administrative staffing position at the college with two exceptions:
1) It could relate under the Professional Service component of the evaluation process for those considered full-time faculty, and
2) If it is determined that their teaching duties and administrative duties are in conflict with each other (e.g., the time requirements of one position are negatively impacting their ability to carry out the duties of their other position).
Deans
The Dean/Department Chair should be evaluated using the same rubrics, expectations, and consequences as any other faculty member. It is important that any teaching evaluations for Deans or Department Chairs be as fair as possible and do not result in any negative or positive repercussions on the evaluators involved in this process.
In general, Deans will be evaluated as adjunct faculty members; they will turn in the materials required of all other adjunct faculty and be evaluated using the same process. It is acceptable for the Department Chair to assign specific faculty member(s) or request another Department Chair in a closely related field to review the materials and write the evaluation, but the primary Department Chair must still review and sign off on the evaluation. Where possible, it is recommended that this evaluation be assigned to two departmental faculty who will work together. After the Department Chair approves the evaluation, the evaluation will be forwarded to the Associate Vice Chancellor in their area for final approval.
Department Chairs
Department Chairs will be evaluated as full-time faculty members. They will turn in the materials required of all other full-time faculty members, with the possible exception of the number of classes for which course materials are required. Their Department Chair duties may be considered in fulfilling Professional Service requirements, even though they are receiving release time and/or a stipend for those duties. The Department Chair and their Dean must agree on one of the following options prior to reviewing the materials and writing the evaluation:
- One or more faculty members in the department will work together on the evaluation. (Two faculty are preferred if at all possible.) They can be assigned by the Department Chair or by the Dean (determined in advance) and preference should be given to experienced faculty (adjunct faculty may be considered for this at the discretion of the department chair). The evaluation will be sent to the Dean for approval and sign-off, rather than to the Department Chair.
- Another Department Chair in a closely related department can review the materials and write the evaluation. The evaluation will be sent to the Dean for approval and sign-off, rather than to the Department Chair.
- If the Dean has sufficient subject-area knowledge, the Dean may review and write the evaluation. The Dean serves as the reviewer and signs-off.
In all cases, after the Dean approves the evaluation, the evaluation will be forwarded to the Associate Vice Chancellor in their area for final approval.
