Greetings, Colleagues,<\/p>\n

Last week we hosted the\u00a0Purpose and Belonging Kick-Off<\/a>\u00a0and for those who could not attend, wanted to provide the recording\u00a0which\u00a0opens with Neil DeGrasse Tyson sharing his experience in not just finding meaning in life, but creating it. The keynote of this initial event and first presenter in our speaker series is\u00a0Tim Klein<\/a>, shares insight about our current educational systems, link to the future of work, and how purpose and belonging play a critical role in student\u00a0success efforts, particularly\u00a0for our most vulnerable students.\u00a0 He also mentions the importance of students taking advantage of support services and forming caring relationships with faculty and staff.\u00a0To this\u00a0end, he provides a sample class activity that faculty can use to connect with students, identify their needs and refer them to student support services – a simple yet powerful type of ‘early alert’ activity embedded in teaching\u00a0practice and connected to student services.<\/p>\n

Tim shares research that shows students with a sense of purpose are:<\/p>\n

\n
– more academically\u00a0engaged<\/div>\n
– get better grades<\/div>\n
– are more likely to graduate<\/div>\n
– have lower levels of depression and anxiety<\/div>\n
– are more resilient<\/div>\n
– have stronger relationships with peers and faculty<\/div>\n
– and are 10 times more likely to thrive in their careers (60% of those with purpose said they were thriving in their careers versus 6% without)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Our speaker series will include monthly presentations from national experts in purpose and belonging research and action. We will host our next speaker, Charles Hunt, from the\u00a0Audacity Firm<\/a>, during\u00a0General<\/a>\u00a0Assembly<\/a>\u00a0on October 1st.\u00a0 We’ve also conducted preliminary\u00a0outreach\u00a0to the\u00a0The Belonging Project<\/a>\u00a0at Stanford University (Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine),\u00a0the\u00a0Othering & Belonging Institute<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society<\/a>\u00a0at UC Berkeley, the Colorado State University\u00a0Center for Meaning and Purpose<\/a>\u00a0(Department of Psychology), and others who have highlighted the way this research can significantly impact our work.<\/p>\n
