{"id":22426,"date":"2022-06-15T15:28:47","date_gmt":"2022-06-15T20:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/accinsweb8366.wpenginepowered.com\/tled\/?page_id=22426"},"modified":"2025-04-29T10:36:50","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T15:36:50","slug":"the-syllabus-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/tled\/teaching-excellence\/collaborate\/faculty-learning-communities\/the-syllabus-project\/","title":{"rendered":"The Syllabus Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Syllabus Project Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is a 10-month learning community that will bring together faculty from our 10 Areas of Study to explore one of the key components of the teaching and learning process &#8211; the syllabus!<\/p>\n<p>In researching the \u2018purpose\u2019 of a syllabus, we find it described as the \u2018guide\u2019 or \u2018agenda\u2019 for what will happen in a course during the teaching period &#8212; Indeed, the word &#8220;syllabus&#8221; is a Late Latin term meaning &#8220;list.&#8221; It has traditionally contained details about the course logistics, contact information, course objectives, assessments, what activities will take place throughout the semester and all related student expectations and requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have found that there are three purposes that it serves:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li>as a record of the course,<\/li>\n<li>as a contract between the instructor and the student, and<\/li>\n<li>as a learning tool (Parkes &amp; Harris, 2002).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This learning community will focus on the third purpose &#8211; the syllabus as a learning tool. Faculty teams will explore instructional and information strategies with the syllabus in mind that help students feel belonging and consider their strengths, skills, values, interests, and needs to find purpose and pursue meaningful work and careers.
