Freedom from Fear and Want: Conceptualizing Peace and Security

April 19, 2013
8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Eastview Campus 8500

ACC students, faculty, and staff were invited to learn about peace and conflict studies at “Freedom from Fear and Want: Conceptualizing Peace and Security.” The free symposium took place Friday, April 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Eastview Campus (3401 Webberville Rd., Room 8500).

The event kicked off with a panel discussion featuring ACC’s visiting scholar Alemayehu (Alex) Weldemariam. The panel explored a variety of topics including national security, human rights, and human development, and what those mean for conceptualizing peace and security.

The second panel looked at the role faith plays in addressing conflict and building peace. That was followed by a screening and discussion of the film “One Day After Peace” and a pie social sponsored by “Peace Through Pie.”

“We want the ACC community to be more aware of the peace and conflict issues that affect our world today, and how they can help make a difference,” says William Hayden, coordinator of International Programs.

The event was presented by ACC International Programs and the Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies Advisory Committee.
