Boundaries and Borders: How Safe Do They Keep Us?

November 20, 2019
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Eastview Campus 8500

Join us for a roundtable with ACC faculty from Philosophy, Religion, and Humanities and Peace and Conflict Studies as we discuss the human needs for safety and boundaries. Professors Azzurra Crispino, Erin Bannen, and Sarah Lynne Bowman will explore the following questions: How do we create a sense of safety in our classrooms, in our personal lives, in our communities, and in our laws? When we discuss safety, boundaries, and borders, whose safety is prioritized and whose might be compromised? Do borders reinforce or destroy safety and for whom? Do boundaries protect us or restrict certain people from their full expression? What is the relationship between boundaries and marginalization? Which boundaries are necessary for autonomy and democracy and which borders are detrimental? While the answers to these questions can sometimes be complex and even paradoxical, this roundtable hopes to deepen our understanding of the human need for safety.
