{"id":17764,"date":"2025-05-02T19:05:28","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T19:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/nexus\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=17764"},"modified":"2025-05-02T19:05:29","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T19:05:29","slug":"blackboard-ultra-assignment-settings-explained","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/nexus\/article\/blackboard-ultra-assignment-settings-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackboard Ultra: Assignment Settings Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When you create an assignment, you can:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>add assignment instructions and content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>control assignment visibility to students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>apply assignment settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assignment Settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If any students in your course have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Ultra\/Interact\/Roster#ultra_exempt\">accommodations<\/a>, they appear in the&nbsp;<strong>Assignment Settings&nbsp;<\/strong>section. You can set accommodations for students and make them exempt from certain course requirements, such as assignment due dates and time limits.<\/em>&nbsp;<em>To modify accommodations, go to the&nbsp;Roster&nbsp;and open a student&#8217;s menu. You can also access it from the Submission page or&nbsp;Gradebook.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the right-hand side of the New Assignment page, under&nbsp;<strong>Assignment Settings<\/strong>,&nbsp;you can view the settings selected for your assignment.&nbsp;To choose and apply different settings, select the&nbsp;<strong>Settings&nbsp;<\/strong>button to open a new panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Details &amp; Information<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The section&nbsp;<strong>Details &amp; Information<\/strong>&nbsp;provides options for assignment submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/rich_text_large\/public\/images\/2023-03\/learn_ultra_instructor_CreateAssignment_assignment-settings_details-information_3.png.jpg?w=580&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image of Details &amp; Information section of Assignment Settings panel\" style=\"width:536px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Provide a due date<\/strong>. Due dates appear on the calendar and in the activity stream. Late submissions appear with a&nbsp;<em>Late<\/em>&nbsp;label in the course gradebook. You can prohibit students from submitting work after the due date. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prohibit late submissions<\/strong>. Enforce a hard deadline and prevent a late submission. In-progress and saved attempts will auto-submit at the due date. Students will receive a submission receipt email. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If students have submitted attempts, you cannot change the due date to a date in the past. If the due date has passed, you can&#8217;t select the Prohibit late submission setting.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Allow class conversations<\/strong>. What if your students have questions about an assignment? You can allow conversations within an assignment, and anyone can contribute. You can change the assignment&#8217;s grade category to be part of one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Ultra\/Grade\/Navigate_Grading#ultra_categories\">custom gradebook categories<\/a>&nbsp;you set up in your course. You can create new categories to customize how coursework is grouped in your course.&nbsp;Custom categories can be useful when you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Ultra\/Grade\/Grade_Columns#ultra_overall\">set up the overall grade<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Determine the number of attempts<\/strong>. You can let your students submit more than one attempt at an assignment. When you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Ultra\/Assignments\/Multiple_Assignment_Attempts#ultra_attempts\">allow multiple attempts<\/a>, you can also choose how the final grade is calculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Select the grading schema<\/strong>. From the&nbsp;<strong>Grade <\/strong>using&nbsp;<strong>menu<\/strong>, select an existing grading schema such as&nbsp;<strong>Points<\/strong>. You can change the grading schema at any time, and the change will appear to students and in your gradebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Set Maximum points<\/strong>. Add a number value between 0 and 99,999 for your assignment.
