{"id":1691,"date":"2020-11-20T11:11:15","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T17:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitex.org\/?p=1691"},"modified":"2023-05-08T15:53:33","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T15:53:33","slug":"levels-of-mediated-aliveness-mozilla-hubs-and-1984-part-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/digitex\/2020\/11\/20\/levels-of-mediated-aliveness-mozilla-hubs-and-1984-part-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Levels of Mediated Aliveness, Mozilla Hubs, and 1984 &#8211; Part One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"E122\"><span id=\"E123\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\" style=\"color: #000000\">by Todd Ellis, Director of Teaching and Learning, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/grayson.edu\/\">Grayson College<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E125\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span id=\"E126\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">This post is the first in a two-part series and is, in part, a response to last month\u2019s post, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><span id=\"E128\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Ready Player One<\/span><span id=\"E129\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, <\/span><span id=\"E130\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Hamilton<\/span><span id=\"E131\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, <em>and Me: &#8216;Liveness,&#8217; Mediated Communication, and Building Relationships in a Virtual World&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/span><em><span id=\"E133\" class=\"qowt-stl-CommentReference\"><\/span><span id=\"E135\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> by <\/span><span id=\"E137\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">DigiTex<\/span><span id=\"E139\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> Executive Director Judith Sebesta.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E141\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E142\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> \u201cWe now live in a world that resembles a dystopian novel.\u201d Henry Giroux, &#8211;<\/span><em><span id=\"E143\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Fascist Culture, Critical Pedagogy and Resistance in Dark Times 10\/22\/20<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E145\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E146\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">As a long-time advocate and practitioner of dialogic pedagogy including Paulo Freire\u2019s critical problem-posing education, I\u2019m sure I have more questions than pithy answers to offer on how mediated communication is changing higher education at this historic moment. The issue is emergent. I also think that the more I contemplate what \u201cliveness\u201d even means anymore, the more lost I get. <\/span><em><span id=\"E147\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Liveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E148\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> has, in a sense, become deconstructed. By this I mean that I can often only bring parts of my <\/span><em><span id=\"E149\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">aliveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E150\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> to an instance of <\/span><em><span id=\"E151\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">liveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E152\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, depending on what tool I am using and why. I have to choose which part of my <\/span><em><span id=\"E153\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">aliveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E154\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> I want to share<\/span><span id=\"E155\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">:<\/span><span id=\"E156\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> my voice, my image, my written thoughts. Zoom, for example, can enable all or some of these at the host<\/span><span id=\"E157\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E158\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> and\/or user<\/span><span id=\"E159\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E160\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> discretion. COVID-19 is a disruption that is requiring a lot of re-thinking and re-seeing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E161\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E162\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Maybe an emerging question is whether I want to promote <\/span><em><span id=\"E163\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">aliveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E164\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> or <\/span><em><span id=\"E165\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">liveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E166\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> in any scenario, and by <\/span><em><span id=\"E167\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">aliveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E168\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> here I mean vitality. For example, the social annotation tool Hypothesis brings a vitality to otherwise isolated reading exercises that aren\u2019t possible without internet connection. It brings an <\/span><em><span id=\"E169\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">aliveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E170\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> in the sense of vitality to reading without any <\/span><em><span id=\"E171\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">liveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E172\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> in the sense of present moment spontaneity or synchrony. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E173\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E174\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">I\u2019ve been reading some insightful books on mediated communication like <\/span><span id=\"E175\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"><em>Personal Connections in the Digital Age<\/em>, by <\/span><span id=\"E176\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Nancy K. <\/span><span id=\"E178\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Baym<\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">and what stands out <\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">to<\/span><span id=\"E183\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> me from every page as I read through the excellent social science research is my own thought<\/span><span id=\"E184\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">:<\/span><span id=\"E185\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> \u201cYeah, but you didn\u2019t HAVE to use this digital tool in order for you and your civilization to remain alive!\u201d That is a context that can greatly <\/span><span id=\"E186\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">a<\/span><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">ffect research conclusions. Fortunately for <\/span><span id=\"E189\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Baym<\/span><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, her technology decisions weren\u2019t made around her ability to remain alive as they potentially are now during COVID-19. Because whatever downsides may have been discovered in research concerning the human effects of digital mediation<\/span><span id=\"E192\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> &#8212; <\/span><span id=\"E193\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">and there are absolutely valid downsides as well as upsides<\/span><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> \u2013 they <\/span><span id=\"E195\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">are temporarily obliterated by the emerging realization that \u201cI am deeply grateful that I have this tool! Maybe my civilization and I have a chance to survive!\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\" style=\"color: #000000\">I recently saw the release of gamified <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/hubs.mozilla.com\/\">Mozilla Hubs <\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">advertising ways for people to have virtual Halloween parties. Since a big part of my job is to test drive new technology for faculty at our <\/span><span id=\"E201\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">school, I thought<\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> \u201cWhy not?\u201d <\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">So<\/span><span class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> I entered a digital haunted house and walked around as a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">robot wrapped in my own personalized <\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Starlink<\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> skin<\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-stl-CommentReference\"><\/span><span id=\"E219\" class=\"qowt-stl-CommentReference\"><\/span><span id=\"E221\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">. I couldn\u2019t add my standard goatee so that really killed my liveness. But he\u2019s bald, so I can relate to that. I wonder if the <\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">armlessness<\/span><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> is a comment from the collective unconscious? Maybe it\u2019s just from my own unconscious. I did, after all, have lots of avatars to choose from and I chose him. \u201cWhy the bald, armless robot<\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">?<\/span><span id=\"E243\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">\u201d I find myself wondering now<\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> Mostly I guess I was drawn to how his periodic eye blinks made him <\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">seem thoughtful and sensitive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"><span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">There is no option to take a <\/span><span id=\"E271\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">live <\/span><span id=\"E272\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">selfie screenshot that would allow you to see \u201cme\u201d in the 3D field, so <\/span><span id=\"E273\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">below I\u2019ve added<\/span><span id=\"E274\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> my snip of reggae dancer Todd-2 getting down on his own after entering the room from my other laptop. While Todd-1 blinks <\/span><span id=\"E275\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">calmly<\/span><span id=\"E276\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, Todd-2 dances non-stop<\/span><span id=\"E277\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">:<\/span><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> my alter ego<\/span><span id=\"E279\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E280\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> my yin and yang<\/span><span id=\"E281\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, <\/span><span id=\"E282\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">or maybe <\/span><span id=\"E283\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">my superego and id<\/span><span id=\"E284\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">. <\/span><span id=\"E285\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">One\u2019s <\/span><span id=\"E286\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">virtual <\/span><span id=\"E287\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">symbolic representations are certainly <\/span><span id=\"E288\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">fertile <\/span><span id=\"E289\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">archetypes for self-interpretation<\/span><span id=\"E290\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> unless you\u2019re a troll<\/span><span id=\"E291\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, of course<\/span><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">. <\/span><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">I could move <\/span><span id=\"E294\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Todd-2<\/span><span id=\"E295\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> around the <\/span><span id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">virtual space<\/span><span id=\"E297\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, but I couldn\u2019t control his\/my dance moves which seriously killed my aliveness as vitality expression. He made his own pre-programmed funky moves. But alas, I realize that <\/span><span id=\"E329\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">that\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E330\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> p<\/span><span id=\"E331\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">robably not going to<\/span><span id=\"E332\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> work well. The only standardly recognizable liveness in Mozilla Hubs is the liveness of synchronous voice from the shared mic. Of course, there\u2019s a certain amount of live personal expression within the confines of defined avatars, personalized skins <\/span><span id=\"E333\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">(digital fashion design<\/span><span id=\"E334\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">?<\/span><span id=\"E335\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">) <\/span><span id=\"E336\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">and our freedom of movement within the digital 3<\/span><span id=\"E337\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">D<\/span><span id=\"E338\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> environment. However, a<\/span><span id=\"E339\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">s<\/span><span id=\"E340\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> proud<\/span><span id=\"E341\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">ly<\/span><span id=\"E342\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> and stubborn<\/span><span id=\"E343\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">ly<\/span><span id=\"E344\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> introvert<\/span><span id=\"E345\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">ed<\/span><span id=\"E346\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">, I\u2019d almost surely have ended up on the porch all evening at a \u201creal\u201d Mozilla Hubs digital party. <\/span><span id=\"E347\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">I would have been live in my typical hardly <\/span><span id=\"E348\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">the life of the<\/span><span id=\"E349\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> party fashion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E350\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E351\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">There is no way to share screens or presentations. I know Mozilla didn\u2019t create these video-gamified hubs for personal meetings, but my point in trying the shared space of a hub was to ask the question<\/span><span id=\"E352\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">:<\/span><span id=\"E353\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> what is <\/span><em><span id=\"E354\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">liveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E355\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> now and how does it relate to <\/span><em><span id=\"E356\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">aliveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E357\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E358\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E359\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Most of the <\/span><span id=\"E360\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">E<\/span><span id=\"E361\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">d-tech that <\/span><span id=\"E362\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">I test drive end<\/span><span id=\"E363\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">s<\/span><span id=\"E364\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> up in a digital heap of junk that <\/span><span id=\"E365\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">lies <\/span><span id=\"E366\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">virtually <\/span><span id=\"E367\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">next to my desk. <\/span><span id=\"E368\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">A digital scrap <\/span><span id=\"E370\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">heap<\/span><span id=\"E372\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">. <\/span><span id=\"E373\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Probably only about <\/span><span id=\"E374\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">five percent<\/span><span id=\"E375\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> even make it past my <\/span><span id=\"E376\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">five<\/span><span id=\"E377\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> minute <\/span><span id=\"E378\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E379\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E380\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">test.<\/span><span id=\"E381\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> This is a comment on the <\/span><span id=\"E382\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">quantity of E<\/span><span id=\"E383\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">d-tech tools, not the quality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E385\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Usually we consider a face-to-face course as the definition of liveness in education. But a face-to-face course may be <\/span><em><span id=\"E387\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">live<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E388\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> without being very <\/span><em><span id=\"E389\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">alive<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E390\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> if it<\/span><span id=\"E391\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> i<\/span><span class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">s overly scripted or monologic in nature. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">This is another way of saying that active learning is <\/span><em><span id=\"E393\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">alive<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E394\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> learning in that it\u2019s an emerging, creative and socially dependent construct within a given classroom. Or as Freire described it \u201cLiberating education consists of acts of cognition, not transferals of information.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E395\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E396\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">Is the ability to share screens, digital images and textual artifacts<\/span><span id=\"E397\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> with each other the<\/span><span id=\"E398\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> defining aspect of <\/span><em><span id=\"E399\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">liveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E400\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> in this emerging world? It is certainly a huge aspect of our <\/span><em><span id=\"E401\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\">aliveness<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E402\" class=\"qowt-font2-Calibri\"> in our socio-cultural worlds generally.
