World Languages
Marcel Pons Ventura is a professor in the World Languages Department at Austin Community College (ACC). She is a multilingual educator with experience in higher education, primary education, nonprofit organizations, and cultural heritage institutions. Marcel teaches Spanish at ACC, where her approach emphasizes meaningful communication, cultural understanding, collaboration, and creating an inclusive environment in which students can grow academically and personally. Marcel earned a double major in Modern Foreign Languages and History of Art from Syracuse University and an M.A. in Hispanic Studies from Boston College, whereat Marcel began teaching at the college level. Raised in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, and having lived and studied in New York, Italy, and Spain, Marcel brings a multicultural perspective and a strong commitment to helping students develop empathy, curiosity, confidence, and respect for diverse experiences.
How has your community college teaching experience shaped your character over your career?
My community college teaching experience has shaped me into a more patient, empathetic, and adaptable educator. Working with students from diverse backgrounds, including heritage language learners, students learning Spanish for the first time, early college students, working adults, and students with disabilities, has taught me to listen carefully, avoid assumptions, and respond to individual circumstances with compassion and accountability. My roles as a Spanish professor and Instructional Associate in the ACC Honors Program have also strengthened my commitment to service, collaboration, and creating spaces where students feel respected, supported, and confident enough to take risks. Most importantly, these experiences have taught me humility, since effective teaching requires continual reflection, learning from students and colleagues, and adjusting my practices so that every student has a meaningful opportunity to grow.
