Kelly Greenwood is a professor in the Math Department, where she has taught for over 15 years years. Her focus is creating and supporting co-requisite courses. Kelly is passionate about helping students develop the habits of mind and confidence needed to flourish on their math journeys and beyond.
How has your community college teaching experience shaped your character over your career?
My goal when I first started teaching was to explain concepts in a way that made them accessible, to save students from suffering through math the way I had suffered. But soon the tables turned, and my interactions with students began teaching me. I learned that students don’t need a course that covers more examples, they need a course that supports courage and curiosity, and that builds perseverance and autonomy. To create this type of course I needed to embody those very things! I became more curious about who my students are and how they learn. I became a better listener. I grew more willing to try new things and to think outside the box. Teaching at ACC didn’t just change how I teach, it changed my perspective on teaching and the person I strive to be.
