Professor of History
Bryan Port is the Director of the Center for Civic and Government Sevice (CGCS) and an adjunct professor in the History Department at Austin Community College (ACC). He joined the college after serving for 30 years in the U.S. government and had an opportunity to retire early. He has long believed, and this conviction has grown substantially in recent years, that the place where he could have the most positive impact was at a community college. He believes passionately in the mission. Bryan is in the dissertation phase of a PhD program at the University of Texas at Austin, after completing two masters degrees in strategic studies from Georgetown University and The National War College.
How has your community college teaching experience shaped your character over your career?
Teaching has helped me battle my cynicism and to pry back open my mind to considering new possibilities for understanding American society. I have enhanced my intellectual curiosity and humility and had the opportunity to work with my students in the mutual cultivation of character.
