Student course evaluations can provide important information about how a class went from the students\u2019 perspectives. Student course evaluations are administered every semester; all of these for the year should be included in faculty evaluations for that year. Reviewers will consider not only the student course evaluation rating for each course, but also the student comments as well as any faculty response to those comments (in the <a href=\"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/accfacultyevalmanual\/appendix-2-instructions-for-faculty-evaluation-materials\/faculty-reflection-form\/\"><i>Faculty Reflection Form<\/i><\/a>). This change resulted from a multi-year effort to develop student course evaluations designed to satisfy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use end-of semester student course evaluations for formative and summative evaluation with an emphasis on formative use for reflection and enhancement of teaching practices.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage both full-time and adjunct faculty members to make changes to their teaching practice based on the results presented in student course evaluations.<\/li>\n<li>Consider student voice presented in course evaluations as significant but as only one point of measurement of a faculty member\u2019s teaching performance.<\/li>\n<li>Foundational to the redesign should be the recognition of the research on inherent implicit bias in student course evaluations.<\/li>\n<li>Distinctions in the ratings for student course evaluations should be clarified by using a three-scale rating identical to that of the new Faculty Evaluation Process. (See below.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Features of the New Student Course Evaluations<\/h3>\n<h5 class=\"CjVfdc\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Teaching dimensions<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">In order to provide faculty with clearer information on how their students felt about different aspects of their teaching, faculty will be provided with individual ratings in each of the following &#8220;teaching dimensions&#8221;, based on student responses to particular sets of questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR \">\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Course Design and Organization<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Instructional Methods<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Assessment and Feedback<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Class Culture<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Student Learning<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">There are multiple opportunities for students to provide free-response comments relevant to each of these dimensions, in addition to some overall free-response questions at the end. In addition, there are unrated questions at the end to help faculty understand which different types of activities students believe are most helpful to them in their learning.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0(Sections 1-5 in the surveys, which cover the 5 teaching dimensions, are the sections that contribute to the Student Course Evaluation rating. Questions in sections 7 and 8 are not considered.)<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \"><br style=\"font-weight: 400\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"CjVfdc\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">5-point Likert Scale<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">The new course evaluation surveys use a revised 5 point Likert scale (recommended by OIRA) of:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR \">\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">1 &#8211; Strongly disagree\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">2 &#8211; Disagree<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">3 &#8211; Neither agree nor disagree<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">4 &#8211; Agree\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">5 &#8211; Strongly agree\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">&#8211; N\/A &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A New Rating Scale<\/h3>\n<h5 class=\"CjVfdc\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">New course evaluation ratings<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">The new course evaluation rating scale has been brought into alignment with the new faculty evaluation ratings; r<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">atings for the revised student course evaluations will be determined as follows, based upon the above 5 point Likert scale:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">For each section taught, the mean of all Likert scale questions will be determined and rounded to the nearest 0.1. The rating will be based on this mean:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul class=\"n8H08c UVNKR \">\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \"><em>If the mean is from 4.0 to 5.0<\/em>, the rating will be <\/span><strong><span class=\"C9DxTc \">ACC exemplary teaching and faculty expectations have been met<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \"><em>If the mean is from 3.0 to 3.9<\/em>, the rating will be <\/span><strong><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Approaching ACC exemplary teaching and faculty expectations<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"zfr3Q TYR86d eD0Rn \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \"><em>If the mean is less than 3.0<\/em>, the rating will be <\/span><strong><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Does not meet ACC faculty expectations<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">(If the software is unable to average all questions, the average of the means of the five teaching dimensions is an acceptable stand-in.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">After 2 years, data from the new student course evaluations will be examined by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/accfacultyevalmanual\/continuous-updating-of-the-process\/\"><em><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Faculty Evaluation Steering Committee<\/span><\/em><\/a><span class=\"C9DxTc \"> to determine if these ratings continue to meet the needs of the college and they will be reviewed on a regular schedule thereafter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"CjVfdc\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Low response rates<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">The <\/span><em><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Student Feedback and Faculty Reflection<\/span><\/em><span class=\"C9DxTc \"> section of the new <\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">Annual Faculty Evaluation Summary Forms<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \"> has a choice for\u00a0 \u201cLow Response \u2013 Interpret Ratings with Caution\u201d for situations where there were too few student responses to consider the overall rating as fair to the faculty member:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"zfr3Q CDt4Ke \" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span class=\"C9DxTc \">For any class sections where the total number of student responses is less than 20% of the class enrollment or 3 responses, whichever is <\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">higher<\/span><span class=\"C9DxTc \">, only student comments and answers to individual questions will be considered in the Student Feedback and Faculty Reflection rating; the overall rating for that class section will not be considered.<\/span><\/p>\n","background":"No Background","background_color":"#FFFFFF","background_gradient":{"gradient_start":"","gradient_end":""},"background_image":false,"text_mode":"dark","size":["Wide"],"id":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"one_column","heading":"","column_1":"<h3>Faculty Process to Monitor Response Rates and View Reports<\/h3>\n<p>Each semester, based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/tled.austincc.edu\/faculty-support\/course-development\/course-evaluation\/course-evaluation-calendar\/\">Course Evaluation Calendar<\/a>, faculty receive an email notification when the course evaluation starts; all student course evaluations will take place online. Students do not have access to the student course evaluations until the start of the evaluation period, late in the semester. During the evaluation window, faculty can monitor the response rates using the \u201cCourse Evaluation\u201d panel in any of their Blackboard courses and encourage students to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty days after the course evaluation ends, faculty receive a system email with their course evaluation reports. They can also view\/download the course evaluation reports using the \u201cCourse Evaluation\u201d panel in any of their Blackboard courses. These reports will be available in the Blackboard panel for three semesters.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, the ACC Course Evaluation System will also email faculty a copy of their course evaluation reports via their ACC Gmail account, with the subject line: &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ACC Student Course Evaluation Results for [Semester]&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>See the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tled.austincc.edu\/faculty-support\/course-development\/course-evaluation\/\">ACC Course Evaluation web pages<\/a>\u00a0for more information.<\/p>\n","background":"No Background","background_color":"#FFFFFF","background_gradient":{"gradient_start":"","gradient_end":""},"background_image":false,"text_mode":"dark","size":["Wide"],"id":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"one_column","heading":"","column_1":"<h3>Student Process to Participate<\/h3>\n<p>Based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/tled.austincc.edu\/faculty-support\/course-development\/course-evaluation\/course-evaluation-calendar\/\">Course Evaluation Calendar<\/a>, students receive a notification and a direct link to the online course evaluation <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">via their ACC GMail account <\/span>when the course evaluation starts.
